How much does a website really cost in Australia?

The prices other Australian providers publish, what pushes a quote up or down, the monthly costs nobody mentions until the first bill, and exactly what ours costs. Every outside figure links to where it was published.

The quick answer

The Australian price guides we checked put a professionally built small business website at about $2,000 to $8,000, plus roughly $75 to $400 a month to keep it hosted, secure and up to date. Our Launch Package is $2,997 to build and $249 a month, and the monthly covers hosting, your domain and up to an hour of changes.

What other Australian providers publish

Two current Australian guides, side by side. Both come from businesses that sell websites or website leads, so read them as a guide to the market, not a quote.

  • A small business website (5 to 10 pages): $2,000 to $6,000, which What's The Damage says is what most Australian small businesses pay.
  • Most small business websites in Sydney: $2,800 to $8,000 (Creative Baguette).
  • A custom build: $6,000 to $15,000, and $15,000 to $40,000 for a larger site joined up to other systems (What's The Damage).
  • An online shop: $5,000 to $60,000 or more (What's The Damage), or from around $8,000 to $9,000 in Sydney (Creative Baguette).
  • Paying by the hour: freelancers about $80 to $150 an hour and agencies $100 to $250 (What's The Damage).

Why quotes for the same website differ so much

A website price is mostly time, so anything that adds hours adds dollars. The big ones:

  • How many pages there are, and who writes the words on them. Writing is often the slowest part of a build.
  • Whether the design is drawn from scratch or starts from a template.
  • Anything the site has to do, not just show: bookings, payments, customer logins, quote tools, a link into your other software.
  • Selling online. A shop needs products, payments, shipping and stock set up and tested.
  • Who does the work. Agencies charge more an hour than freelancers (see the rates above).
  • What happens after launch. Some prices include hosting and changes and many do not, which is where the monthly bill comes from.

When you compare quotes, compare what is in them, not just the bottom line: the number of pages, who writes the words, whose name the domain is registered in, and what the monthly fee covers.

The monthly costs people forget

A website keeps costing something after it goes live. These are the running costs the same guides list:

Added up, What's The Damage puts the usual running cost at $75 to $400 a month after launch. Budget for it from day one, so the site is looked after the first time something needs fixing.

Doing it yourself with a website builder

A website builder is the cheapest way to get something online: a monthly subscription and your own evenings. It works if you enjoy it and have the time. What you really pay with is hours: writing every page, choosing photos, setting up the enquiry form and the domain, then keeping it all current. If those hours are worth more to you on the tools, that is the comparison to make.

Is a Facebook page enough?

A Facebook page is a good start and costs nothing, but it has limits a website does not. It runs on Facebook's terms, it cannot give you an email address on your own business name, and it cannot hold a separate page for each service and each suburb you work in, which is what people type into Google. Keep the Facebook page: a website works best beside it, not instead of it.

What ours costs

Since this guide quotes everyone else's prices, here are ours. The Launch Package is for a business that is not properly online yet: $2,997 to build your website, then $249 a month to look after it. Over your first year that is $5,985 all up, before any extras.

Built once

  • A 6-page website: your home page, 3 service pages and 2 area pages
  • Your domain registered in your name, or we use the one you already own
  • A logo, favicon and branded share image
  • Deeper on-page SEO structure across every page
  • Google Business Profile tidy-up after launch: you create it (or use the one you have), we align it once you add us
  • Social launch pack: launch graphics and ready-to-post captions
  • One full round of changes before go-live

Every month

  • Hosting, security updates, daily backups and 24/7 uptime monitoring
  • Your domain renewed on time while you are on the plan
  • Every website enquiry texted to your phone the second it lands, and kept in your MP Launch portal
  • A managed business number for your website that rings your own mobile. Miss a call and we text the caller back in your business name
  • Up to 1 hour of website changes or email help every month (extra time is $250 an hour, and unused time does not roll over)
  • We start on anything broken within 1 business day
  • A monthly health check on your links, forms and speed
  • Your own login to watch it working: enquiries, visitors and Google clicks, live

Optional extras

  • Business email with Microsoft Office: $30 a month per mailbox
  • Extra pages: $280 each

One price to build it, one price to look after it. Cancel the monthly plan any time.

Already trading and only need the website itself? That is quoted: a fixed price in writing before any work starts.

Common questions

How much does a small business website cost in Australia?

The Australian price guides we checked put a professionally built small business website at about $2,000 to $8,000: $2,000 to $6,000 for a 5 to 10 page site (What's The Damage, October 2026) and $2,800 to $8,000 for most small business websites in Sydney (Creative Baguette, September 2026). Custom features and online shops cost more.

How much does a website cost per month?

Expect roughly $75 to $400 a month once it is live (What's The Damage), made up of hosting, care and maintenance, your domain and any business email. Our Launch Package is $249 a month after the $2,997 build, and that covers hosting, your domain, your enquiries sent to your phone and up to an hour of changes every month.

Why do website quotes vary so much?

Because a website price is mostly time. The number of pages, who writes the words, custom features like bookings or payments, and whether hosting and changes are included all move the price. Compare what each quote includes, not just the total.

Is it cheaper to build my own website?

In dollars, usually: a website builder costs about $30 to $60 a month (What's The Damage). The real cost is your time to write it, design it, set it up and keep it current. If that time is worth more to you working in your business, compare it honestly against a quote.

What should a website quote include?

The number of pages, who writes the words, whose name the domain is registered in, what the monthly fee covers (hosting, backups, changes) and how you cancel. If any of those is missing, ask before you pay.

  • Creative Baguette: a Sydney web studio's price round-up, last reviewed 27 September 2026, quoting its own prices beside GoDaddy's, Keen to Design's and Devout Digital's.

  • Google Workspace pricing: Google's Australian price list, read 16 October 2026. Prices shown before tax.
